Jane Murphy Voted Most Outstanding Female Athlete – 1973

Outstanding three sport athlete. Earned nine varsity letters out of a possible nine in three sports: field hockey, basketball, softball. Varsity starter for three years in all three sports. Captain of all three teams.

Field Hockey
  • Leading scorer for Natick in 1972.
Basketball
  • Averaged 17 points per game, leading scorer in the Bay State League her senior year, had a 31 and 51 point game (no three point shots at this time); MVP and high scorer all three years.
Softball
  • Averaged one home run per game, hit three home runs over the Dedham right center field fence in one game.
  • MVP for two years.

Ned Mahan
  • Played baseball at NHS for three years; he was nicknamed “the janitor” by his opponents since he was constantly present in the school and on the fields; member of the Natick track team. (100 yard and the 220 dash as well as the relay races)
  • Dubbed “The greatest football player he had ever seen” by Jim Thorpe
  • Ned was a three time “All American” at Harvard who was offered several professional baseball contracts. Later years was considered to be the Joe Namath of Football, and the Sandy Koufax of Baseball.
  • Natick’s E.F. Mahan varsity baseball field named and dedicated in his honor.
