The Three Conditions
The three conditions are ways of expressing if statements also known as hypothetical statements. The first condition, would be translated to, "If x, then y". The "if" statement would be in the present tense, and the "then" statement could be in either the present tense, future tense, or impératif. The 'if' statement could also be in the passé composé and the "then" statement could be in the present tense, the future tense, or the impératif. Each of these have very different meanings, as shown in the table below this. The second condition can be translated to "If x, then y is a possibility". The "if" statement would be in the imparfait and the "then" statement would be in the conditionnel. The third condition in English would be, "If x had happened, y could have happened". For this condition, the "if" statement would be in the plus-que-parfait, and the "then" statement would be in the conditionnel due passé.
