Hello, welcome to AtomicStructure.com! What’s that smell you ask? That’s the smell of a learning experience! Here you can find everything you’ll need to know about atoms, their makeup, and the scientists who studied them. The site is broken down according to each scientist and their contributions to how we see an atom today. The site also explores the Periodic Table and nuclear symbols for different elements. You can view some of the scientist’s experiments that lead to the discovery of the atom and videos that will explain it further.
This site was created by Tyler Pagliazzo as a project in Advanced Web Design. I had Mrs. Magnuson for sophomore chemistry and chose to make this website for her to use in her curriculum. I hope that this site can help break down most of the information in this unit.
So what are atoms, anyway? Well, everything that you can see and touch, or pretty much anything that takes up space, is called matter. Matter is made up of tiny things called atoms. Atoms are too small to see with the human eye and therefore, it takes billions to make up even something as small as the tip of a pin. One of the first people to conceive of the idea of atoms was an ancient Greek philosopher named Democritus. He believed that everything was made up of small particles that could not be cut any smaller. In fact, the word “atom” derives from the Greek word átomos which means “uncuttable”. The atom is made up of smaller particles called protons, neutrons, and electrons. You’ll learn more about these three particles throughout the unit. I hope that this site is useful and makes learning about atoms more interesting!
